The Highpoint Fire on Saddleback Mountain

The "Highpoint Fire" on Saddleback Mountain east of the Utah State University campus in Logan, Utah started around 1:30 p.m. on Friday, July 28. Significant flare-ups continued all weekend. This image was taken from North Aggie Village.

Cause: a hawk flew into power lines at the base of the hill, causing a transformer to explode and setting fire to the grass below. Power was out across Logan for a short time.

Casualties: the state and local firefighting budgets, and hopefully some rattlesnakes. No private property was damaged.

Fire retardant bomber does its thing.

Local Reaction: most entertaining event in Logan in years. Folks were out on lawn chairs and picnic blankets late into the evening watching the show.
